The Pirates of Penzance Southaven Theatre reviews
Great Show with Lively and Touching Music
The show featured a variety of lively numbers and softer, emotional arrangements with a mix of male and female backup singers, dancers, and musicians accompanying the three female leads and female solo violinist.
The music, ranging from well-known classics like Oh, Danny Boy and Amazing Grace to lesser-known titles and Enya's Ornica Flow, was always engaging. The ensemble of around 14 members allowed for breaks, ensuring a fresh and energetic performance from all entertainers throughout the concert. In addition to the great music, there were comedic elements such as a dance-off, a percussion battle, and an in-song skit.
From powerful voices to stirring drums and the haunting bagpipe melodies, the concert delivered a diverse range of sounds that evoked emotions and shared tales of old and new times.
Despite being in the second-to-last row of the small theater, the seats still provided a good view of the stage, complemented by surprisingly good sound quality even at the back. The reviewer expressed relief at not being closer to the stage to avoid potential loudness.
The reviewer's main critique was the high cost of merchandise and the inability to see items before purchase. They found the $20 program and $25 CDs overpriced compared to online alternatives like The Pirates of Penzance website.
Overall, a well-executed show.
